The February Face

25 February 2015

February: What a strange combination of letters.

It was the beginning of February when my face called out to me. It pleaded I put the dewy foundation down and give something lower maintenance and more skin-like a go. "And please, for the love of all that is good in the world, can you please find me a better colour match?" My face was right. The summer sun had left me bronzed and out of foundation options.

The search to appease my face started with an attempt to use powder as my base. The result was surprisingly nice (far less cakey than I had imagined it would look). It was lower maintenance than liquid foundation and it gave quite a natural finish, but it lacked the coverage I was after.

The next contender appeared when I was clearing out my makeup collection. I had somehow forgotten about the L'Oreal Nude Magique CC Cream, but fate has once again brought us together. The product comes out green and changes to a tan colour when blended, claiming to cover redness and imperfections. Nothing seems to cover my redness completely whilst still looking natural, but this little guy comes pretty darn close. The colour is a tad too neutral/orange for my strong yellow undertones, but the velvet matte finish is just so dreamy. More on this CC cream in a later post.

Onto eyebrows; I've been lightly filling them in with this tiny nub of a thing – the Essence Eyebrow Designer in Blonde. Under my eyes, I've been using my Old Faithful, the Bobbi Brown Corrector in Peach, and setting that with any old powder. Wayne Goss' ingenious tissue-sponge-blotting tip comes next (watch this if you haven't already). A light dusting of the Milani Multitasker Face Powder in Light Tan keeps the shine at bay, and a smidgen of the Josie Maran Watercolor Cheek Gelee perks the face up.

I went through a long phase of using a tissue to take extra product off the wand of my mascaras before applying them (it always seems to smudge underneath my eyes if I don't), but with the Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara in Waterproof, I've quite enjoyed just applying as is. I do have a little trick I do now with mascaras, but that's an entire post in itself.

On the lips? In keeping with the low-maintenance theme: nuthin' but a little lip balm. Go-To Lips! to be exact.

It was nice knowing you, February, but I'm ready for March. Hello, Autumn.
