The Perky Powers of a Red Lip

25 April 2015

Although I'd probably pick dark lips over red most days, I can't deny that there's something about red lips that just lifts the face like no other. It's a bit like a sports bra for the face, except you get mega lift without the tightness, without the underwire that digs in, and best of all, without any pesky back-fat (in the words of Dave Hughes; 'how can you fight fat you can't even see!?').

Not as sophisticated as a deep red, not as stark as fire-engine red, today's colour of the hour goes to the ever-so-perky Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencil in 'Light it Up'The formula is incredibly pigmented, swiping on in a creamy dream, but it leaves your lips with a slight sheen and tackiness that keeps it from being completely matte, which is great for comfort. Just personally though, I have a matte bright lips policy so I pat that sister in and blot her down till she doesn't transfer. Plus, it brings out the raspberry tones that make this colour so brightening.

More sheer but just as lovely is the Bourjois Color Boost Glossy Finish Lipstick in 'Red Sunrise'. This stuff is seriously comfortable on the lips, and a great option if you're not a big fan of bright lips or you just love the look that sheer lipsticks give you (who doesn't!?). The formula is an interesting one; it's more pigmented than you might expect of a sheer lipstick, but it still maintains that glossy, hydrated, jelly-like finish that makes your lips look--dare I say it?--juicy. It's the perfect kind of colour for 'no makeup' makeup days. It's love, I tell ya.
