The Sheer Nude Lip

19 May 2016

Bright lips and liquid lipsticks are great, but sometimes we're after something a little more low key. That's where sheer nude lipsticks come in handy. They're perfect for when you want to polish up your look but don't want your lipstick to be too obvious, or when you're on the go, or if you don't have time to be touching up throughout the day. Plus, you can apply them without a mirror, which is always a win for me as I can't help but feel self-conscious when I stand in front of a mirror in public to apply makeup.

L-R: Fresh Honey, MAC Hug Me, MAC Jubilee

If tinted balms with SPF are your thing — and let's face it, SPF should be everyone's thing  you might want to give the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in 'Honey' a go. It's an amazing brown-terracotta nude that's so flattering on warmer skin tones. If you've tried the likes of MAC Spice, Taupe or Mocha and you like how they look on you, you're going to like this one too. If you prefer less of a warm of brown nude, don't fear. Fresh do their Lip Treatment in pleeeenty of colours, so you're bound to find the right shade for you.

If you're into pinky mauves or cooler-toned nudes, you might like the MAC Lipstick in 'Hug Me', which is a Lustre finish. I've heard a lot of people say that they're not a fan of MAC's Lustre formula because it doesn't last on their lips, but I think that's just the nature of a sheer, glossy lipstick. The longevity isn't there, but they're so much easier to reapply than something highly pigmented. I think Hug Me could be a my-lips-but-better shade for so many people, particularly if you have a light to medium complexion. For reference, I'd say it's similar in depth to MAC Velvet Teddy but obviously less pigmented. Both are a touch too light for me to wear alone on my NC35/37 skin, but I wear them anyway because they're such pretty colours.

A more beigey brown option is the MAC Lipstick in 'Jubilee' (also a Lustre finish). This purchase was totally a throwback to Tanya Burr's Top Ten MAC Lipsticks video which I must have watched countless times when I was first getting into makeup (who else remembers watching it!?). Jubilee looks similar to Fresh Honey but I thought I'd include it in case you're a fellow MAC lipstick hoarder looking for your next kill. I don't hear many people talking about Jubilee so it's definitely an underrated shade, but such a nice everyday lip colour.
